intersectionality
intersectionality
Intersectionality is the acknowledgement that everyone has unique experiences of discrimination and oppression. We must consider everything and anything that can marginalize people – mental & physical ability, sexual orientation, gender, race, class, etc.
These intersecting and overlapping social identities may be both empowering and oppressing.
Originally coined by American scholar and lawyer Kimberle Crenshaw, who drew inspiration from Black feminist movements in the US, the term highlights how race, gender, class, and other factors are interconnected.
